A comparison of growth and biochemical composition of Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lmk.) and Mytilus edulis (L.) on the West coast of Cotentin, Normandy, France 1999-2000 ArchiMer
Kopp, Joel; Cornette, Florence; Simonne, Charlotte.
The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis has been reared along the Normandy coast line since the 1960s. The gonadal cycle of this mussel species shows a sharp decrease in meat quality during the winter period after spawning. This decline in meat quality is so severe that sales have to be suspended from December to July. Another species of mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, which is reared in the lagoons along the French shore of the Mediterranean Sea has a different spawning cycle. An experiment was undertaken to study the meat quality of M. Galloprovincialis throughout the year after the spat were transferred from the Mediterranean Sea to the Normandy coast. This species showed an immediate adaptation to the gonadal cycle of M. edulis. Despite suggestions from...

Assessment of gonadal follicle size in the invading bivalve Limnoperna fortunei (Mytilidae) Biocell
Guimarey,Pilar; Darrigran,Gustavo; Damborenea,Cristina; Penchaszadeh,Pablo E..
Limnoperna fortunei is an invasive gonochoristic and byssate freshwater bivalve originary from Southeast Asia. It shows great adaptive-reproductive ability, so knowledge of the gonadal cycle is an important factor for the prevention and control of this bioinvasion. This species is highly damaging to natural and human environments. We analyzed the distribution and maturity state of reproductive follicles in the mantle of both male and females. Male results are not shown but, in general, they followed the same pattern as that of females. Routine histological techniques included serial longitudinal sections and transversal sections in three body regions (anterior, middle and psoterior). Oocytes with conspicuous nucleoli were measured on both types of sections...

Ciclo reprodutivo do mexilhão Perna perna (Linnaeus) (Molusca, Bivalvia) da Lagoa de Itaipu, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Mesquita,Eliana de Fátima Marques de; Abreu,Marta Guimarães de; Lima,Francisco Carlos de.
The gametogenic aspects of mussel Perna perna (Linnaeus, 1758) from Itaipu Lagoon, Niterói, were studied through November 1998 to October 1999. Microscopic analysis was carried out at low and high dry magnifications, as well as under oil immersion. The animals collected showed variation of size from 4.8 to 9.1 cm in total length and from 2.0 to 3.9 cm in total width. Most advanced gonadal stage was detected through May, August and October of 1999 for female specimens. Male advanced gonadal stage occurred in September of the same year. The sex-ratio (M:F) for P. perna was 64:52.
